Why can i get a gold cap fitted on maternity covered NHS but i cant get a white filling done?

free maternity cover on the nhs. when i had my daughter 18 months ago i had a gold cap fitted over on of my teeth and it was covered by the nhs. I went back to the same dentist today only to be told that i cant have a filling in my tooth untill may next year because of the mercury. i understand this but if i want a white filling it will cost me £90. How can i gold cap be free but a white filling cost me £90?

At the moment the NHS will not fund "white fillings" at all in back teeth. Gold crowns are an excellent treatment and that's what most dentists would have in their own mouth.





White fillings (composites) are very technique-sensitive and don't tend to last as well as metals. Your dentist is right not to use mercury fillings in pregnant or breast-feeding mums (although the risk from mercury to either you or your child is minimal).





Although you are thinking that gold is surely more expensive (and it is) so why is it free and white fillings aren't, it is generally longer-lasting and therefore better for the patient (as well as being more cost-effective).
Reply:ah look. Just pay the money. Who would want to be goin around with gold teeth. You've only got one set so look after them. I recently paid 400 euro for a root canal and didn't think twice about it. I want mine to last for life.

Reply:I only know why the white filling is not covered have no idea about the gold cap. The white filling is because it is considered cosmetic they won't pay for cosmetic they will only pay for the silver fillings.
Reply:A gold cap, which the dentist still needs to run past the system to justify the cost, is considered a necessary dental procedure. The use of a white filing is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered.
Reply:White fillings are covered by NHS only in your two upper and two lower front teeth.
