Are gold fillings the best replacement for mercury amalgams?

I've had mercury amalgam fillings in my back teeth since I was a child. I'm concerned the metal continues to seep into my system. I've heard porcelain composites don't last in back teeth, but do dentists still use gold fillings if you have the cash for them? And do they prove to be the best fillings?

Are gold fillings the best replacement for mercury amalgams?
gold is always the best restoration for your mouth. by best i mean that it will last the longest. they are quite a bit more expensive than silver fillings. if it was my mouth i'd get a silver filling. the american medical association just did a huge long term study on them and supported what the ADA has been saying forever....amalgams don't hurt you! stop watching dateline and 20/20. trust me, i'd love for it to come out that you need to have all of your silver fillings taken out and replaced with something else. think of the profit!!! it would be like all of the plastic surgeons in the 80s that removed silicone breast implants and replaced them with saline.
Reply:Gold is soft they won't last long.
Reply:Gold is the best and priciest filling material. Composites, amalgams and gold are all good, just go to a good dentist who cares about your mouth and loves dentistry.
Reply:You will release more mercury into your body by having the silver filling drilled out than if you left them there for the rest of your life.

If you are concerned about the "fit" of alternative types of fillings, gold tends to fit better than porcelain. Composite fillings supposedly "strengthen" the tooth, but they also irritate the hell out of the teeth.

At any rate, if there is nothing wrong with your current fillings, you should probably just leave them alone.
