Foaming at the mouth and chattering teeth?

My dog is a shepherd mix %26amp; he's 3 yrs. He's very active and eats a very healthy diet...he was acting completely normal today. This afternoon he went for his monthly bath at Pet Extreme ...(a local pet store that offers do-it -yourself baths for $10, they supply shampoo, towels, etc.)...he's been to this store several times...I had a bag of treats (they are made by Solid Gold - the same brand that's his dog food)..he had a few and we went in....he smelled the floor in the store and I noticed that he licked it a few times...then looked up at me and his teeth were chattering and his mouth was foaming...I didn't know what to do...I comforted him and we went home. He's been fine ever since...he didn't vomit or show signs of this again. It just scared me because I've never seen him exhibit this behavior...he's now acting totally normal and eating/drinking fine. What could this be from?

Foaming at the mouth and chattering teeth?
He licked something that tasted nasty.

Soap or something.

When we taste something gross, we wash out our mouths, that's what the foam was trying to do.

The teeth chattering was like us shivering in disgust. Like when you hear finger nails on a black board, or smell or taste something awful.

If he has no other symptoms, I think he's fine.

It could also be the opposite.

He tasted something wonderful.

You know how your mouth waters when you're about to eat your favorite food? Sometimes maybe a happy shiver?

Same for him. Coulda been a female in heat, coulda been food. Dogs have strange opinions of what's nice.
Reply:There was probably a dog that was in heat in there. I've seen quite a few dogs sniff or lick where a dog in heat has been and do the same thing.
Reply:He smell GIRL PEE on the floor.. When male dogs smell girl pee, they chatter and they foam or drool..
Reply:Dogs sniff, taste and drink urine as a way of assessing the health status of other animals within their vacinity. Completely normal. When a male finds urine that is especially interesting they will teeth-chatter and foam slightly at the mouth.

For what its worth.. unspayed females smell when they are not in season... which is enough of a reason for your boy to asses the issue.. just in case.

Neutering may or may not cure the issue... neutered dogs are well-known for tying (breeding) in season (heat) b*tches.
Reply:Either a female in heat was just there and dripped on the floor, or another dog urinated or pooped on the floor, I have seen dogs foam at the mouth and teeth chatter due to all the above.....even neutered, he will do the same thing for a female...nothing to worry about, is normal
Reply:Neutering doesn't help ANYTHING they say it will. My dog does this when he licks my girl greyhounds rear. And he still lifts his leg to mark etc. etc.

But don't worry. =) He is fine.
