They're becoming outdated because they break down over time, they allow for continued tooth decay and they release mercury into the patient's system. Newer fillings are made from a porcelain composite. They're white and blend well with the teeth, it's generally hard to tell there's even a filling there at first glance. They're much better for your teeth since they actually checmically bond with your teeth rather than just sitting in them like amalagams do, they last longer than the older versions and they help prevent further decay.
