My fellow blacks, why do we invest so much into material things (read on) ?

First, before I get started, I am not interested in ignorant racist answers so expect to be reported!! Now on to my question. I watch so many music videos based on "sippin on Cristal" or "rolling on 22's". All of today's music is about blinging platinum and diamonds, driving a Maybach or some other expensive car or insulting black women. If we're not rapping about any of those subjects, we're rapping about killing one another. And then we wonderwhy our children are growing up with no morals or values and no respect or regard for another human's life. So many of my black brothers are driving around in fancy cars with huge, shiny rims, gold teeth (mostly in the south) and can't save up enough money to move out of their mother's house. When will we as a people learn that this is our downfall? When will we learn to focus on more important things like saving for our children's future, investing in a home for our families, raising our children properly etc??

My fellow blacks, why do we invest so much into material things (read on) ?
Who was it that taught blacks to hate the color of their skin, texture of their hair? Who taught them to hate the shape of their nose, shape of their lips? Who taught blacks to hate their self each other so much so they don't like to be around each other?





Blacks have been taught to hate their self and find love in material things, because back in the day they said "a black man think he made it if he had a cadillac." I believe they try to hard to buy stufff just so people will know they have money.





Like example when they go out they have to have the lastest shoes and new clothes. Jewerly, expensive too and a nice car with rims. So this way everyone can see "they have money" I believe it's a strong need for them to be able to show they a not poor.





I think it just self esteem they say "what a man think so is he" when you hear a rapper rapping about material things Like Baby from Cash Money then you know that what he is. He need those thing to make him happy. Because most blacks are this way they will spend and spend to keep up all because they have been taught they need these thing to feel important.





You have to solve the root of the problem I was once that way and still something am. I use to want everything I couldn't afford. Come to think of it, it was only to make me feel better about myself. I got a 07 escalade because I could afford it. Others do it just because someone esle did it.





Truth is they have been poor so long that they want to buy all of this stuff to feel better about theirself which is more important than the long run. You seen it, if a person feels bad about something then that's one of the worst things a person can go through. Like women who spend money on shoes, face lifts to feel better and be happy. Also by watching the Media they praise this image and the people like this justice this image by saying i'm better than you.

Reply:I think TV has alot to do with it. I don't think it's just effecting the black children, I think it's effecting all children. I wish i had the answer for you, just know your not alone
Reply:As an Asian guy I have always wondered that same thing. With the exception of guys like P. Diddy, Jay Z., Russell Simmons, and few others most do not think of the future. They all live for right now. Look at MC Hammer and Mike Tyson. They were worth 100's on millions of dollars years ago and now both are nearly broke.


They spent a lifetime's worth of money in less than a decade and allowed outsiders to influence them into making bad investments or bad choices which led to their demise. Also, why do none of them invest in black owned business other than clothing companies. I remember when Michael Jordan used to have a celebrity golf classic about 100 miles from me and you never saw him step foot in the ghetto to meet the kids who bought his sneakers and clothes. He always hung with the upper class people which were usually white.
Reply:I think it makes people feel better about their over all appearance. If you drive an expensive vehicle, and have lots of diamonds and expensive cloths. It doesn't make you somebody. Material things are not important to me because of the way I was raised. I was raised to think love, family and friendships were more important than the brand of jeans you put on in the morning. I believe it all comes back to how you were raised.


Red, Yellow, Black,and White. It doesn't matter when you were not taught right from wrong. I can't answer the question when will we learn to focus on more important things, but I will say this,


By the time you know you didn't save or invest in your future it's probably way to late!

But I can surely see your point. I lived in or near black neighborhoods for much of my life and have seen what you are talking about firsthand. I have many black friends and some do what you are talking about. They have expensive clothes, top of the line shoes, gold necklaces, and really nice cars and they save up money to buy expensive things. And most important a high powered stereo in their car so that people 3 blocks away get to hear it to. And I am not a racist in anyway, I have nieces and nephews that are half-black and I never thought much of it one way or the other. But I can tell you that I would never go into a bar where it is mostly black people because I know that any arguement will end up in violence. And there are black racists.





As you say rap music, that is, much of it is about drugs and violence, kill cops, kill brothers, kill whoever. This is not just a black problem but is spreading all over our country. I know people that are 25 years old, still live at home with their mother, don't work but somewhere they get money for drugs. In Milwaukee, WI where I live numerous shootings in black neighborhoods have resulted in any black children being shot, "by accident." That is, the shooter was shooting at someone else. I watch the black mothers grieve and cry on TV


about their loss, and it is heart breaking. I hope that this changes soon, but I doubt that it will. And that is just to bad.
