When did gold caps on teeth become popular and how?

I recall seeing them almost thirty years ago on African American men from the Deep South. Their caps had star shaped cutouts creating a white and gold flash.

They are called %26quot;grilles%26quot; today and are still mostly popular with Black rappers and gangbangers (is there really a difference???). Some even have gemstones set in their %26quot;grilles%26quot;.

Kinda reminds me of the old James Bond movie villian called %26quot;Jaws%26quot;.

The effect is quite flashy....and trashy.

When did gold caps on teeth become popular and how?
when hitler extracted them
Reply:That%26#039;s easy, its on rappers who want to look rich. Lil%26#039; Jon replaced his teeth with diamonds, i hear
Reply:That has been out for years. My grandmother had a crown around her front tooth when she was in her 20%26#039;s and she%26#039;s now in her 80%26#039;s. She gave it up many years ago, but that has been done for years. It was done in a more respectful manner and not trashed out the way these rappers and wanna-be thugs are doing it now.
Reply:THEY HAVE BEEN USING THEM FOR OVER 1OO. GOLD WAS THE EASIEST TO WORK WITH BACK THEN
Reply:As soon as people started having enough money to cap teeth, teeth were capped.

Thunk of it this way, to cap your teeth means that they are protected from the outside world more easily, and in a time when you were guaranteed to get cavities (think any time before toothbrushes), metal and especially gold (nrdl: its one of the softest metals around) was an aesthetically pleasing (for some) alternative to just having holes in your mouth

Besides, what a better way to show off how loaded you are?
