Can I get a gold tooth cap on NHS?

I'm 17, in full time education. I've had a HUGE silver filling on one of my back teeth for about 5 years. The filling hs been gradually wearing away, and I'm pretty sure that they can't drill the tooth anymore. I hardly ever eat on that side of my mouth cos it feels uncomfortable. I'm not in any pain. I went to a dentist and he said he wouldn't do it until I'm 18, but I think that's just cos then I'll be too old to get it done on NHS in his practice.

Am I ellegible to get this done on the NHS or do I need to bend the truth? If so, what should I say?

Thanks for any helpful answers!

Make sure you get a check up/ exam appointment before you are 18 and all treatment on that course will be free, you dont say if you are in scotland or england, i work in scotland so i can advise on our regulations.

Discuss this with your dentist to see if a crown on the tooth would benefit you, it makes no difference to them if you pay for treatment or not, as when under 18 the nhs will pay 100% for you and after 18 they pay 20% with you paying the other 80% so your dentist gets paid the exact same fee.

You wont get a white coloured crown on the NHS if it is a back molar tooth, as NHS stopped providing these a few years ago, they will supply a gold or silver coloured on as white was seen as purely cosmetic. metal is sufficiant for function. If you want a white one this must be done privately which the dentist would advise you of his charge can be £250 or more!

As for not being able to drill any tooth, a crown would involve the dentist cutting the tooth down to a core, you have to create the space for the crown to fit over - again you need to discuss this with the dentist.

No point in "bending the truth" this could result in you not getting the correct treatment

Hope this helps!
Reply:You wont get a gold filling on the NHS,some people can't even get a dentist.
Reply:I got two gold caps on the NHS and a crown and a bridge. It was a few years ago but I don't think it's changed.
Reply:i think there is some truth in the age thing - i broke my front tooth and te dentist wouldnt touch it until i was 18 when my teeth stop growing - if that helps!
Reply:wel cris, im princess and if you do bend da truth it wold help a lot man. cuz i got sum caps and i bended da truth and it worked out fine! dat iz just my opinon. do what ya think iz best.
Reply:I have four gold crowns. These were done on the NHS. The reason they use gold is because it is a very strong metal and inert. This means that the life of the crowns is very long and is thus economically the best course of action .Unfortunately my dentist has now gone private. However, you should be able to get a gold crown if most of the tooth is gone. I am not sure if they use any other metal for crowns. But, the NHS does use gold for crowns and bridges, porcelain covered in some cases. And yes, I think you have to be 18 for some treatments.
Reply:the nhs does use gold crowns and caps not sure about fillings thought.
Reply:You ARE entitled to the crown and you should move quickly because if you are over 18 you will have to pay NHS fees.
Reply:I got a gold cap on the NHS but it was one of my front teeth
